Technical Analysis Syllabus

Course focus: Beginner → Advanced, with strong emphasis on Relative Strength (RS), Momentum Investing, and practical use of Indian tools (TradingView, StockEdge, Screener.in, Tijori Finance, Trendlyne).

Key design choice: Delivery (delivery/positional & swing trades / investing for holding) is given higher importance than short-term volume-chasing. This course is built for retail Indian investors who want to build wealth — not for intraday gambling or option quick bets.

Course Overview

Duration: 6 months

Total classes: 25 (2 hours each)

Mode: Online / Offline (recordings + class notes)

This course designed for:

Beginners who want a structured path into technical analysis.

Swing & Positional Traders who hold trades from days to months.

Full-time working people (job, service, small business) who want practical, time-efficient strategies to invest & create wealth.

Not covered / discouraged: gambling-like short-term strategies such as intraday scalping or option-buying as pure speculation. We teach how to avoid these traps.

Key learning outcomes (what students can do after course)

Read and interpret candlesticks, patterns, support/resistance.

Apply moving averages, RSI, MACD, Bollinger Bands and ATR to Indian stocks.

Build and backtest RS-based & momentum portfolios.

Use TradingView, StockEdge, Screener.in, Tijori Finance, Trendlyne for screening, alerts and basic backtesting.

Compute and interpret Sharpe Ratio and other risk-adjusted metrics for stocks/portfolios.

Execute live trade setups: entry, stop, target, and position sizing (practical).

DETAILED SYLLABUS (Class-Wise)

Module 1 — Foundations & Charting

Goal: Build a strong base — charts, platform basics, and basic candlesticks.
  • Definition, assumptions, market cycles, difference vs fundamental analysis.
  • Murphy linkage: why charts matter for timing.
  • Assignment: Read 1 Day price charts of 3 Indian stocks; note visible trends.
  • Line, Bar, Candlestick. Candle anatomy, timeframes.
  • TradingView basic demo: layouts, watchlist, saving templates. Quick Zerodha/Upstox order flow (how chart analysis maps to placing orders).
  • Tools demo: TradingView live.
  • Single-candle patterns: Doji, Hammer, Hanging Man, Marubozu. Interpretation in Indian context (examples: reliance, tcs).
  • Practical: Mark patterns on daily charts of 5 selected NSE stocks.
  • Multi-candle patterns: Engulfing, Morning/Evening Star, Harami. Pattern reliability & volume confirmation.
  • Assignment: Pattern journal — 2 weeks observation.

Module 2 — Trend, Support & Moving Averages

Goal: Trend identification, support/resistance, moving averages for trend-following.
  • Uptrend/downtrend/sideways; higher highs/lows; structure breaks.
  • Indian example: Sector rotation visualization (e.g., Auto vs Pharma).
  • Horizontal zones vs dynamic zones; role of round numbers, previous gaps, pivot points.
  • Exercise: Build S/R heatmap for a chosen stock using TradingView & StockEdge.
  • How to draw valid trendlines/channels; avoid overfitting. Use multiple timeframes.
  • Practical: Draw and validate channels on weekly charts.
  • Interpretation, crossover strategies, MA ribbons, MA as dynamic S/R. Use 20/50/100/200.
  • Tool use: Apply MA templates in TradingView; alerts.

Module 3 — Volume, Delivery Data & Price Action

Goal: Teach how to confirm market moves using volume + delivery data, understand genuine accumulation/distribution, and combine with price action & market internals for delivery/positional trading.
  • Difference between Traded Volume vs Delivery Quantity / Delivery %.
  • How to interpret delivery % with price moves (accumulation, distribution, speculative churn).
  • Rules of thumb: Delivery % > 40% with rising price = strong accumulation.
  • Practical demo: NSE data + StockEdge scanners (delivery % trends).
  • Assignment: Track delivery % for 5 stocks over 1 month and compare with price moves.
  • Candlestick rejection wicks, retests, false breakouts.
  • Use delivery % to filter genuine vs false breakouts.
  • Example: Cup & Handle breakout with high delivery % vs low-delivery fake moves.
  • Practical: Live chart reading with delivery overlays (TradingView + StockEdge).
  • Understanding FIIs/DIIs flows and sector rotation.
  • Intermarket analysis: equities, commodities, currencies (as per Murphy’s framework).
  • Indian context: NIFTY vs INR vs Crude Oil, and sector-level flows.
  • Use delivery + volume data to confirm institutional accumulation in sectors.
  • ATR (Average True Range) for stop-loss placement and risk management.
  • Bollinger Bands for volatility squeeze/breakouts (with delivery confirmation).
  • Use ATR on delivery/momentum stocks to plan stop distance and position size.
  • Exercise: Calculate ATR-based stop for 3 delivery trades (mid-cap & large-cap).

Module 4 — Indicators & Oscillators

Goal: Understand and apply common indicators; emphasise RS vs RSI distinction.
  • Overbought/oversold, divergences, RSI timeframes, use cases in India.

  • Exercise: Spot RSI divergence on top 10 movers of last 3 months.

  • MACD lines and histogram, crossovers, using MACD with trend.
  • Squeeze concept, breakout trades, mean-reversion opportunities.
  • What is RS vs RSI: RS (relative performance) = stock vs benchmark (NIFTY / sector) — not oscillator. Use weekly & monthly RS.

  • How to compute: (Price ratio method / slope method / RS line).

  • Practical: Create RS line in TradingView / StockEdge — compare two stocks vs NIFTY.

  • Assignment: Build an RS ranking of 50 stocks using Screener.in/Trendlyne/StockEdge.

Module 5: Advanced Technical Tools & Trading Strategies

Goal: Recognize patterns, judge breakouts, combine with RS & volume for higher-probability trades.
  • Head & Shoulders, Double Top/Bottom — target projection & stop placement. Indian case studies.
  • Flags, Pennants, Triangles; ideal breakout confirmation.
  • Checklist to validate a breakout: RS strength, volume, volatility, market internals, multi-timeframe confirmation. Use real Indian examples.

Module 6 — RS & Momentum Investing (Deep Dive)

Goal: Build, test and manage RS-driven momentum portfolios (CORE of course).
  • Classic RS momentum rules: rank, select, weight and rebalance. Why momentum works (behavioral & market structure). Link to Murphy’s momentum sections.
  • Practical: Monthly RS ranking process — step-by-step.
  • Use StockEdge, Trendlyne, Screener.in, Tijori Finance and TradingView for: RS rank, price performance, liquidity filters, institutional holding checks.
  • Tool task: Create 10-stock momentum list using StockEdge scan + screener filters.
  • What is Sharpe Ratio: formula, interpretation, annualization.
  • How to compute (step-by-step): gather returns (daily/weekly), compute mean excess return, divide by standard deviation; annualize. Show simple Google Sheets formula.
  • Use for Indian investors: comparing funds/stocks, combining with RS to avoid high-volatility traps.
  • Limitations & alternatives: Sortino, Information Ratio.
  • Practical: Compute Sharpe for a 6-month momentum basket vs NIFTY using sample returns.

Module 7 — Backtesting, Risk & Multi-Timeframe

Goal: Validate strategy through backtesting, manage risk & execute live trades. Final assessment & portfolio.
  • Backtesting logic, look-ahead bias, slippage, discrete vs continuous returns. Simple backtest in Google Sheets / TradingView Pine (concept).
  • Assignment: Backtest a simple RS+MA crossover for past 2 years (paper).
  • Position sizing rules, risk per trade (percent), stop placement with ATR, portfolio-level risk. Use Sharpe insights to size positions.
  • Practical: Create position-sizing sheet for final project portfolio.
  • Students present momentum portfolio (selection, entry/exit, Sharpe estimate, backtest results). Q&A and improvements.
